I’ve never met a personality quiz I didn’t want to take. As a teenager in the U.S. in the late ’90s, Seventeen magazine trained me well.
So when eight distinct patterns began emerging as we developed the Learning Philanthropy Framework, there was only one thing to do: turn them into a quiz.
The 10-minute Learning Philanthropy Archetype Quiz reveals how learning tends to happen inside your foundation—how it is structured, encouraged, rewarded, and talked about—and offers a practical starting point for strengthening it.
Take the Learning Philanthropy Archetype Quiz. You’ll receive:
your foundation’s Learning Philanthropy Archetype, plus a possible secondary archetype
three emerging strengths
three emerging tensions
reflection questions tailored to your foundation
Or keep reading and meet the eight archetypes first.
The Eight Learning Philanthropy Archetypes
Emerging Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: There is real interest in learning, and promising practices are appearing, but they are not yet consistently embedded in how the foundation works.
The growth opportunity: Take what works in one part of the philanthropy and find ways to spread it to others.
Procedural Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: Evaluations happen, evidence is collected, and reports are produced. The harder question is whether all that learning consistently changes decisions, priorities, or resourcing.
The growth opportunity: Move from the production of knowledge to the use of knowledge.
Relationship-Centered Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: Learning happens largely through trust, conversation, collaboration, and strong relationships.
The growth opportunity: Complement these strong relationships with systems that help learning travel further and last longer.
Leadership-Led Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: Leaders visibly champion learning, ask questions, invite feedback, and sometimes change direction. But how much does learning depend on those particular leaders?
The growth opportunity: Embed learning practices and the right structure and resourcing for learning so they are not vulnerable to leadership transitions.
Bottom-Up Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: Staff drive much of the learning. People experiment, reflect, and improve their work, even if organizational systems are not always supportive.
The growth opportunity: Build leadership support for learning and remove the barriers that make it harder for staff to learn, reflect, and act on what they are learning.
Externally-Oriented Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: The foundation looks outward and learns actively from partners, communities, networks, and peers. The question is how much that external learning also changes what happens internally.
The growth opportunity: Turn inward, but not completely! Use what you are learning externally to ask how the philanthropy itself may need to change to better support partners and other stakeholders.
Cautious Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: People may be learning more than they feel able to say. Difficult questions, failures, or challenges to established assumptions can be hard to discuss openly.
The growth opportunity: Address the elephant in the room: psychological safety. Work with leaders to create safer conditions for difficult conversations, disagreement, and learning from failure.
Adaptive Learning Philanthropy
How learning happens: Learning is part of how the work gets done. Evidence, experience, reflection, and external perspectives influence decisions, and the foundation adapts when circumstances or understanding change.
The growth opportunity: Pay attention to the other side of adaptation. Too much change can overwhelm staff or confuse partners. Create enough stability and clarity that people can adapt without feeling like the ground is constantly shifting beneath them.
You might recognize your philanthropy in more than one of these archetypes, and that’s completely normal.
Ready to take the quiz?
Did someone say a personality test for philanthropies? Yes we did! The Learning Philanthropy Archetype Quiz takes approximately 10 minutes. At the end, you’ll receive:
your Learning Philanthropy Archetype, plus a possible secondary archetype
three emerging strengths
three emerging tensions
questions worth exploring further
There is no score or maturity rating. Think of it as a starting point for noticing how learning currently works and where you might want to look more closely.
And if it leaves you thinking, “That sounds like us. What would we learn if we explored our learning practices and enabling conditions more fully?” The full Learning Philanthropy Framework and Self-Assessment are designed to take that conversation further.
